Bio

Herb Bales served with the United States Air Force where he was selected to attend the Defense Language Institute to learn German and Russian for duty in Berlin, Germany. After serving in the military, Bales received degrees in Accounting and in Business Management from NC State and has worked with several real estate companies in the Raleigh area. He continues to mentor NC State students, serves on the Audit and Finance, as well as the Gifts and Awards Committees of the NC State Foundation Board, and was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award by Poole College of Management in 2020.

In 2024, Bales was instrumental in establishing the NC State Study Center for students, and serves on its Board of Directors. In addition to being a Microsoft Certified Professional, Bales currently serves as Chief Financial Officer for Atlantic Investment Management. Bales and his wife, Elizabeth, met at NC State and have endowed the Herb & Elizabeth Bales Scholarship awarded to students studying business or accounting. They are celebrating 40 years of marriage and enjoy traveling, taking long walks and hosting students in their home.
