Leading the Way: Textile Pioneers Begin New Journey

The Wilson College of Textiles has launched its first need-based scholarship to help recruit next-generation talent to NC State. Specifically focused on North Carolina’s rural counties and first-generation university students, the Textile Pioneers Scholarship Program aligns with NC State’s land-grant mission to expand access to students while adding to the Pack’s geographical diversity. This year’s inaugural class comprises five talented Textile Pioneers, four of whom are the first in their family to attend any university.

Wilson College of Textiles Welcomes 2024 Class of Centennial Scholars

The Centennial Scholarship program was established by the North Carolina Textile Foundation in 1999 as part of the Wilson College of Textiles Centennial Celebration. These scholarships are awarded to incoming first-year students based on academic achievement in high school, proven and potential leadership qualities, extracurricular activities and unique life experiences. Meet the 10 Centennial Scholars from the class of 2024.

Inside ABB and NC State’s Decadeslong Partnership

This year marks 30 years since a productive relationship between ABB and NC State began. Over the decades the partnership has grown, playing a critical role in the university's research advancements focused on smart energy — working to improve the reliability and reducing the cost and environmental impact of electric power systems. One immediate outcome of the partnership was establishment of the ABB Distinguished Professorship, currently held by Iqbal Husain of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, who serves as director of the Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management (FREEDM) Systems Center.

Collins Continues Support for Agricultural Innovation

William Collins Sr. has made his mark on NC State in many ways. He was a renowned Extension tobacco specialist, a natural teacher and pioneering researcher and has volunteered for University Advancement. The 2018 Watauga Medalist is also a philanthropist who, with his wife, Ann Collins, has endowed a professorship among other gifts. Now, he has made yet another mark on the college and university as a donor by naming a room in the Plant Sciences Building.

The NC State Stewards student leadership program is transforming a part of Gardner Arboretum into a hub for students to learn about solar power. Financial support from several grants including the Stewards Impact Grant, the College of Natural Resources Enrichment Fund and the NC State Sustainability Fund is helping make the project possible.
