Diversity Seminar Series to Address Inequities in Natural Resources

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion at NC State’s College of Natural Resources is launching a virtual seminar series to address the discrimination and systemic inequalities faced by marginalized individuals in fields related to natural resources. Funded by the Duke Energy Foundation, the Diversity, Inclusion and Racial Equity (DIRE) Dialog seminar series aims to create a lasting impact within the college community that brings about a change-culture to further promote a climate of equity, inclusion and belonging.

Pauls Establishing Scholarship in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

Alumnus Donald R. Paul and his wife, Barbara, have established the Donald Paul CBE Scholarship with an endowed gift of $125,000 to NC State's Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. The need-based scholarship is for undergraduate students in the department, preferably residents of eastern North Carolina. Awards will be for one academic year and may be renewable. Paul, who earned his bachelor's degree from NC State in 1961, is a professor and the Ernest Cockrell Sr. Chair in Engineering in the McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin.

NC State Statistician Dickey Named Clarivate Citation Laureate

David Dickey, William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Statistics at NC State, has been named a 2020 Citation Laureate by Clarivate Web of Science. The award honors researchers whose work and influence “is comparable to that of past and future Nobel Prize recipients.” Dickey, who helped create the widely used Dickey-Fuller Test in 1979, is an award-winning statistician and a founding member of NC State’s Institute for Advanced Analytics.

Grant Continues Support of Crop DNA Replication Research

Two NC State professors recently received a three-year, $3.3 million grant from the National Science Foundation to continue their work of 17 years unraveling how plants control DNA replication and how this influences agronomic traits. Linda Hanley-Bowdoin, a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor of Plant and Microbial Biology, is the lead investigator on the grant. Bill Thompson, a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology, is the co-investigator.

Saving the Irreplaceable Rowdy

When her Staffordshire terrier Rowdy developed a fast-growing cancerous tumor, Jennifer Beard feared that she might be losing her beloved friend. Thanks to expert treatment at NC State Veterinary Hospital and assistance from the Petco Foundation and Blue Buffalo Cancer Treatment Fund, things are looking up.

Elijah Bouma-Sims ’21 Helps Secure $100,000 for Research Funding at NC State

Park Scholar Elijah Bouma-Sims ’21 published his first co-authored paper earlier this year, the culmination of an 11-month study on robocalling. First, it won the Distinguished Paper Award at the 29th USENIX Security Symposium. Then, it won the first-place Internet Defense Prize, a $100,000 grant that will support future research at NC State.

The College of Engineering named mechanical engineering and religious studies student Pippin Payne as the 2020 Faculty Senior Scholarship recipient. The scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time student who exemplifies academic excellence, intellectual breadth and depth of character.

Dr. George Washington Carver, renowned researcher at Tuskegee Institute (now known as Tuskegee University), discovered more than 300 uses for the peanut plant in the early 1900s, many of which still apply today. NC State scientists such as David Jordan, William Neal Reynolds Professor and Extension peanut specialist, are doing their part to continue that legacy and support our farmers.
