About Fitts-Woolard Hall

The College of Engineering’s newest academic and research building, Fitts-Woolard Hall is home to the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering; the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering; and the dean’s administration, unifying the College of Engineering on Centennial Campus.

The construction of Fitts-Woolard Hall was made possible by a unique public-private partnership. Half of the $150 million needed for the building was provided by public funds, via a bond referendum passed by North Carolina voters. NC State secured the remaining funding through the generous support of NC State alumni and friends.

Previously known as the Engineering Building Oval, the building has been named in recognition of Edward P. Fitts, Jr. and his, wife, Debra, and Edgar S. Woolard, Jr. and his wife, Peggy. The Fittses and Woolards have demonstrated their dedication to NC State and the College of Engineering through their service and transformative philanthropic support. Fitts-Woolard Hall honors their commitment to the College of Engineering’s continued growth and progress.

Fitts-Woolard Hall brings the College of Engineering together on Centennial Campus by serving as the home for the dean’s administration; the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering; and the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and System Engineering.

Dr. Louis Martin-Vega became dean of the College of Engineering in 2006. The college has climbed in national rankings during his tenure and is currently ranked 25th overall and 13th among public universities. Dean Martin-Vega and his wife, Mrs. Maggie Martin, established the Dean’s Club with a leadership gift to support Fitts-Woolard Hall.

Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering

The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) is one of the largest of its kind — and one of the best.  Under the leadership of department head Dr. Morton A. Barlaz, CCEE is committed to cutting-edge research in such areas as computing and systems, geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering, structural engineering and mechanics, and transportation systems and materials.

Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering

The Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) continues to gain recognition as one of the best in the country. Led by Dr. Julie Swann, A. Doug Allison Distinguished Professor, ISE is tackling innovative solutions to challenges facing biomanufacturing, advanced manufacturing, rapid prototyping and health systems engineering.
